Chapter 360 - 362: Escape
Chapter 360 - 362: Escape
Her touch was light, but the coffin lid still made an unavoidable, faint sound.
Fortunately, the two ghosts outside weren’t in the grave with her. Timing it carefully, Ming Yue pushed a little harder, finally opening a small crack.
The light was still dim, but it was a great improvement over the complete darkness inside the coffin.
Gathering her strength, Ming Yue pushed the lid open little by little until she could poke her head out.
She saw the same dilapidated, dirt-filled structure and let out a careful sigh. Then, forcing her body to twist and contort, she squeezed out through the small gap she had created.
Luckily, her slender frame meant it didn’t take too much effort.
Once she was out of the coffin, her first thought was to escape the grave itself.
’But where’s the door?’
Su Nian’s voice reminded her just then.
"There’s no door. Just dig your way out from beside the coffin."
"Dig with my hands?"
Ming Yue asked.
Su Nian affirmed. "This grave mound is very fragile. You only need to claw at it a few times, and it will collapse."
Hearing this, she nodded. Her hands began to dig desperately.
Dirt began to crumble down, covering her face. Dust fell into her eyes, but she didn’t hesitate for a second.
She kept digging, her tears washing the dust from her eyes.
Her face was now black with grime, but her hands never stopped. Finally, after a large clump of earth fell from above, she saw the open sky once more.
After she scrambled out, trembling, she realized she was in a true graveyard. Burial mounds were everywhere.
A sliver of a moon hung high in the night sky, its eerie silver light slanting across the cold gravestones.
All around, as far as the eye could see, stood countless earthen mounds of varying heights.
The scene was exceptionally eerie.
Ming Yue clutched her phone and swallowed hard.
Then she broke into a run toward the forest in the opposite direction. She kept her head down, not daring to look back for even a second.
She was terrified of what she might see. As she fled...
...the two figures—the ones who seemed so bizarre yet so inseparable—walked back.
One was a young man in the prime of his life, the other a withered old hag, yet they walked arm in arm, looking sickeningly sweet.
Upon seeing the familiar burial mound, the old hag dissolved into a wisp of smoke and shot inside.
Her companion, the young man, simply walked in through the hole.
The moment they were inside, they knew something was wrong.
The large, red coffin they had prepared for Ming Yue now had its lid pushed aside.
Dirt was scattered beside the coffin. The small mound had clearly been partially dug out, as if someone had just escaped.
They exchanged a look, instantly sensing the problem.
"That damn girl escaped!"
"I underestimated her. To think she actually realized something was wrong!"
The old hag’s voice was particularly jarring in such a place.
They exchanged another glance. A single thought passed between them: ’We have to catch her!’
Meanwhile, Ming Yue was stumbling through the mountain forest.
Everything was too bizarre. Overwhelming fear washed over her, and she sobbed as she ran, but she still followed Su Nian’s instructions.
She first left a trail of footprints leading into the forest, then began making a wide loop, preparing to circle back to the grave.
[So scary! She’s really brave. If that were me, I’d be crying my eyes out.]
[I wouldn’t have even dared to climb out, let alone run back toward it.]
[The thought of so many graves, each with a ghost living inside... that’s terrifying.]
[I just took a quick count. There have to be dozens of ghosts.]
[One or two ghosts is one thing, but dozens? All with different causes of death, crawling out of their graves... just thinking about it makes my skin crawl!]
But it wasn’t over. Just as Ming Yue ran into the forest and turned to head back, she vaguely spotted two figures running in her direction.
Using the trees for cover, she quickly dropped to the ground and began to crawl.
Su Nian had just instructed her to be extremely cautious and not let those two things discover her trail.
"Hurry, Old Hag! Here are her footprints! She must have gone this way!"
"Tell the others to keep an eye out. If they spot any sign of her, they’re to call for us immediately!"
"Fine, fine. It’s just that those old geezers are jealous that we get to return to the world of the living. Who knows if they’ll actually help us."
The old hag grumbled, then let out a strange, keening sound.
It sounded like she was calling the other ghosts for help. Witnessing this, Ming Yue’s heart sank even further.
Sweat beaded on her palms, dampening the soil she clutched in her hand.
She pressed her entire body to the ground, crawling back inch by inch.
She made a loop, crawling out from the other side of the woods, while the two ghosts charged straight ahead through the trees.
At that moment, they were no more than a dozen meters apart.
But the two ghouls were in such a hurry that they completely missed Ming Yue, who was prone on the ground and moving slowly.
"She’s just a girl; she couldn’t have gotten far. She has to still be in these woods!"
"Right! We’ll chase her through the woods."
Mo An shouted, and the old hag followed him. Trailing behind them were several other ghosts, glowing with a blue-green light.
