Chapter 4 The Demons of the Villa District
Chapter 4 The Demons of the Villa District
"Um... hello, my name is Fang Qi, nice to meet you!"
Fang Qi scratched his head, mentally drafted his thoughts, and then greeted Su Jue.
"Hello, my name is Su Jue."
Su Jue nodded.
"Is this your first day here too? What do you think these superpowered organizations usually do? Do they secretly save the world like in TV shows and novels?"
Seeing that Su Jue was paying attention to him, Fang Qi continued speaking with a hint of excitement.
"It's not that exaggerated, but it can be considered as making a small contribution to the world."
Pei Min came out before Su Jue could speak. As he spoke, he pointed to his office, gesturing for the two of them to look in that direction.
Pei Min's office door was wide open, and the plaque hanging on the wall behind his seat was clearly visible.
The plaque prominently displays the words: "While this place exists, the world is at peace."
"I hope you can do it." Su Jue shifted her gaze from the signboard back to Du Peimin, noticing that the other was holding a stack of papers. "This is..."
"Your first mission also includes all the information I've compiled about the Warlock's Three Words from the morgue, which I can access within my authority."
Pei Min handed over the documents, "But I have one more request."
I knew he wouldn't be that kind.
Su Jue thought to herself.
"What are your requirements?"
"I hope you can share any information you gather about other organizations with us."
"OK."
Su Jue agreed to the condition without hesitation.
Putting aside the fact that he doesn't care about the infighting between these organizations, even if the morgue knowing too much would be detrimental to him, wouldn't it be better if he didn't tell them or didn't tell them everything?
Therefore, he could absolutely agree to this request.
"Let him come with you. This task is simple, there's no need for a senior to guide you. Let the two newcomers get used to the job."
Pei Min pointed to Fang Qi behind Su Jue.
"Is there anything else for me? Let me see what kind of mission it is!"
Fang Qi immediately came over, but he paused for a moment when he saw the name of the mission.
"Investigating the evil spirits of the Jinxiu Jiayuan villa area?" Fang Qi picked up the paper, looking at it more closely. After confirming he hadn't misread it, he scratched his head and said, "This sounds like a folk tale, doesn't it? Superpowers...do sorcerers do this?"
"That's all for now. I have class. See you this afternoon. I'll be waiting for you at the entrance of Pingchuan No. 2 Middle School."
Su Jue waved a stack of papers and walked out.
……
Although it was called class, Su Jue had been thinking about that matter ever since she got the materials, and she had no interest in attending class at all.
The morgue records firmly believe that the sorcerer's three words are a mission. They believe that gods are harmful to mankind, and the last sentence of the sorcerer's three words is considered to be the way to achieve world peace.
"Kill, die, god, light..."
Su Jue softly repeated these four words over and over.
Time flies, and before we knew it, the setting sun had once again painted the sky red.
"Old Su! That girl's here again, want to go see her?"
A while after the bell rang, Wang Yang came in from outside carrying his schoolbag.
"Um?"
Su Jue looked out of the classroom.
The girl was wearing a white dress and matching Nike sneakers.
She stood outside the door, and after calling Wang Yang to relay the message, she didn't deliberately look inside, but just leaned against the door and casually glanced around.
She was very quiet, and only when the wind blew and messed up her hair would she raise her right hand to tuck the ends of her hair behind her ear.
Xu Menghe.
"Well, Lao Su, later you... never mind, I'm off. Good luck!"
Wang Yang was about to invite Su Jue, but seemed to feel awkward about it and took his words back.
He spoke very softly at the beginning of his sentence, so Su Jue didn't hear him clearly. Just as she was about to ask him a question, Wang Yang ran away.
Su Jue walked to Xu Menghe's side and asked first, "What is it?"
"Can't I contact you unless there's something wrong? You're quite the delicate person!" Xu Menghe said. "Have you joined the morgue?"
"Well, it sounds more respectable than puppetry, even though it sounds like a place where people pretend to be dead."
Su Jue nodded.
"It's better to be careful."
Xu Menghe said.
"Is that all you wanted to say? If not, I'm leaving?"
Su Jue wanted to finish the mission and go home as soon as possible, otherwise her husband would nag her again.
"No, I meant to say thank you for saving me yesterday." Xu Menghe said, extending her left hand to offer a beautifully packaged box of chocolates. "Consider it a thank you gift."
"You're welcome."
Su Jue accepted the chocolate, smiled at the other person, and then walked towards the school gate.
……
After Su Jue left, Xu Menghe immediately lowered her head and started playing with her phone.
"Their new base? It's nearby, what's it called again? Splendid... Homeland?"
She zoomed in on the map on her phone, which was covered in markings, and made another mark on the residential area called Jinxiu Jiayuan.
……
"Here, here!" Su Jue had just stepped out of the school gate when he saw Fang Qi waving at him from across the street.
"Do you think there's any story behind this haunted house?" Fang Qi looked at the task sheet again and again.
"I live in that neighborhood, so maybe I saw a human-faced demon during a walk once, but judging from the description, it shouldn't have anything to do with human-faced demons," Su Jue replied slowly.
"So how do we get back? Will the morgue provide us with sports cars or something?" Fang Qi gestured with his hand in the air.
Su Jue took out two coins and waved them in front of him; the afternoon sunlight made the two coins shine.
"Public transportation... that's fine too, it's closer to the people." Fang Qi took a coin from Su Jue's hand and fiddled with it.
On the bus, Fang Qi sat nervously, his eyes darting around.
Suddenly, he seemed to notice something and stopped his shifting gaze.
"Hey, Su Jue. Look at that person." Fang Qi tugged at Su Jue's sleeve, but his gaze never left her.
Su Jue looked in the direction Fang Qi pointed and saw a wrinkled man in the corner of the bus, gesturing incessantly on the glass with his hand.
Ordinary people might not be able to see it, but Su Jue and Fang Qi saw it clearly—
A distorted piece of hieroglyphics.
"Damn it! Su Jue, what do we do? What do we do? Quick, stop him!" Fang Qi anxiously grabbed Su Jue's hand.
"Wait, don't look at him yet." Su Jue pulled Fang Qi down forcefully, making him lie on her lap, and covered Fang Qi's mouth with her hand.
The man in the corner glanced at the two of them, and seeing nothing unusual, resumed drawing words.
"What if we scare him so much that he kills the hostage? We're on the bus right now," Su Jue said softly, releasing her hand from Fang Qi's.
Fang Qi nodded cautiously: "Then what should we do?"
"Let me take another look." Su Jue stood up, walked to the back door, clenched her left fist, and kept glancing at the person.
If we can't handle it, everyone on the bus will die...
He kept his eyes glued to the man's hands, watching him complete the gesture, the outcome of which remained a mystery.
He remembered that the document stated that pictographs, or "shi" in Mandarin, were essentially used to define the form in which sorcerers performed their spells, so they had a direction and a pattern.
So as long as...
As the bus was about to arrive at the next stop, Su Jue took out her phone, accepted Fang Qi's friend request from yesterday, and sent him a message: "Round the bell as soon as the doors close."
Su Jue rang the stop bell, got out of the car immediately after the door opened, and walked to the back of the car.
A red dot of light gathered at his fingertips, and using his memory, he drew another character on the outside, reversing the order in which the man had drawn it.
Just as the drawing was about to be completed, the train doors closed, preparing to start moving again to the next station.
"bite"
"Sorry, sorry, I was just spacing out. I have to get off at this stop." On the bus, Fang Qi rang the bell again, apologized to everyone after the door opened, and then slowly got off the bus.
Taking advantage of this brief moment, Su Jue completed the drawing just as the car door closed again.
As the bus drove away, Fang Qi walked over to Su Jue and asked, "How are they? Are they alright?"
"All done, thanks." Su Jue patted Fang Qi on the shoulder, then walked towards Jinxiu Jiayuan with her hands in her pockets.
"Hehe, so what's the situation with the villa?" Fang Qi followed Su Jue's steps.
"It's nothing. Apparently, the owner of that villa claimed he wanted two of his friends to visit it after buying it, but both friends died mysteriously. When the police found the man after investigating the villa, he had gone insane and was diagnosed with mental illness at a mental hospital." Su Jue recalled the story that had been circulating in the neighborhood.
"And what was the result?" Fang Qi wondered. After all, two people had died. They couldn't just let it go like that, could they? If they really just let it go like that, then the police would be useless.
"That's what we're investigating. When the police investigated later, they found that there were no two friends at all, neither from the villa owner's friends nor from the police database. So in the end, they concluded that the villa owner must have gone crazy a long time ago, before the police were called." Su Jue paused as she spoke.
Fang Qi stopped and looked up to see that they had arrived.
It was very dark here, surrounded by greenery, which almost completely blocked out all light sources. He had no idea what the person who designed this villa was thinking; it was like a haunted house.
"Let's go in." Su Jue stretched out her finger, drew a few characters, and scattered them around the villa before taking a step.
This is a newly discovered usage based on the records. Disassembling the formula like this will not trigger any spell effects, and it will shatter at the slightest touch.
However, the form provides feedback to Su Jue when it breaks, making it very suitable for reconnaissance.
"What if there's someone inside? Are you just going to walk right in?" Fang Qi shuddered, glancing behind him every now and then, before quickening his pace.
"For ordinary people, it depends on the situation; for warlocks, arrest them." Su Jue turned to look at Fang Qi: "The homeowners have all gone mad; how can there be anyone here?"
"Won't I get bad reviews for using excessive force?" Fang Qi complained, as if this could alleviate his fear.
"Come in."
Su Jue called out.
Before Fang Qi could even look, Su Jue had already entered the villa.
He flinched, then immediately jogged inside and closed the door behind him.
"Damn, it's all dusty, and this doorknob is so dirty... Su Jue? Where are you?" The villa was dark inside, and Fang Qi lost his way as soon as he closed the door.
What neither of them noticed was that a figure outside the door witnessed their entire arrival and departure.
Suddenly, a small flame rose in front of him, illuminating the area around them.
"Wow, you're so cool!" Fang Qi exclaimed, his eyes filled with curiosity as he saw the flame in Su Jue's hand.
"There doesn't seem to be much downstairs, let's go upstairs and take a look." Su Jue saw that the first floor was very empty, so she thought she would go upstairs to take a look.
Sure enough, he noticed something was wrong as soon as he got to the second floor. He recognized the smell; the entire second floor was filled with a faint stench of corpses.
"Someone died." Su Jue exhaled. "I don't know if it was intentional."
"Should we go back and report this? There's no mention of this section on the task list." Fang Qi stopped at the top of the stairs, urging Su Jue to leave.
"Um... how should I put it? It seems we can't leave. The message I left behind has been triggered." Su Jue glanced at the doorway. "I wonder how powerful the person who came is. I think we should find a place to hide."
Fang Qi swallowed hard, steeling himself to follow Su Jue upstairs to find a room to hide in: "Damn it, I'm in big trouble..."
Outside the villa, the man raised his foot, seemingly preparing to kick the door open and go in, but stopped just as he was about to exert force. His gaze fell on the doorknob.
There was a patch of dust that had been wiped off the handle, which should have been covered in dust.
He gave a cold laugh and lifted his foot again.
"Bang"
The villa's front door was kicked open, bringing a sliver of light inside, but as soon as the door closed again, the villa was plunged into darkness once more.
Su Jue and Fang Qi walked further in and finally stopped in front of two rooms at the end.
Su Jue placed his hand on the doorknob of one of the rooms. Whether it was psychological or not, he had a feeling that there was something in the room.
"Thump. Thump. Thump."
The sound of footsteps echoing on the stairs reverberated through the empty villa, accompanied by a feeling of fear that slammed into Fang Qi's heart.
In a moment of desperation, he still pulled the doorknob and went into one of the rooms.
In the room, Fang Qi was filled with worry when a cell phone was placed in front of him.
"What are your abilities?" Su Jue typed these words on her phone.
Fang Qi took the phone and, with trembling hands, hurriedly typed four words: "Temporary blindness."
At that moment, the footsteps outside the door stopped, and the world fell silent.
"Squeak"
The door was pushed open, but the room was empty.
So he started opening the next door.
This voice kept repeating itself, and it was getting closer and closer to his goal.
Soon, the door next to Su Jue's room was closed. Words floated around him, ready to shatter at any moment.
"Bang"
Just as everyone inside and outside the house was poised to attack, the villa's main door was suddenly kicked open.
"Wang Wei! Are you there? Come and greet your grandpa!" A rough male voice came from downstairs.
"Tsk, I'll kill you right now."
Su Jue clearly heard the complaints from the people outside the door.
Then came the sound of footsteps growing fainter and fainter.
About two minutes after that person went downstairs, Su Jue and the others came out and heard the sound of teaware falling.
"Damn it, Wang Wei, do you have a death wish? Do you believe I'll tell the morgue about you raising a human-faced demon?" the man roared.
"These two are fighting amongst themselves. We'll run away once they start fighting. Use your abilities as needed," Su Jue instructed Fang Qi, turning back to him.
Fang Qi gave an "OK" gesture.
Downstairs, Wang Wei took out the fruit knife he had tucked into his waistband and stabbed the other man again, but the man dodged the sudden attack.
A fight was about to break out, and the two were locked in combat. Wang Wei had no time to care about any strangers who might appear in the villa.
Su Jue hid on the second floor, ready to unleash a spell at any moment, but when he peeked out, he found one of the people staring intently at him.
They found me? What a terrible day...
There's no point in worrying about that; the plan will have to proceed as scheduled.
Just as the other party was about to snatch Wang Wei's knife and deliver a fatal blow, a fireball landed in front of them and exploded before touching them, followed by a moment of blindness and two hurried footsteps.
Wang Wei threw the knife into the air, and just as it was about to hit Su Jue, Fang Qi quickly picked up the broken tea set on the ground and threw it over, knocking the knife aside.
The sudden darkness quickly ended, and seeing that the people had escaped, Wang Wei prepared to resume their struggle.
"Damn it, Xu Yi, it's all because of you! You let him go!" Wang Wei grabbed the other man by the collar.
"I did it on purpose." The man being mentioned wasn't in a hurry. He looked up at the second floor: "You can't control that one inside anymore, can you? If you keep raising it, you'll be exposed sooner or later. Pack your things and give this treasure to them after they've finished their report."
"You spotted them early on?" Wang Wei put the man down.
"What else?" The man smiled.
"You're not the same Xu Yi as before, you just have the same face." Wang Wei stared intently at the man.
"Of course, he's dead, so I became him, and everyone can be him now." The man smiled and extended his right hand: "Let me introduce myself, I am Jiang Qin, the newly appointed resident manager of the 'Thousand Faces Cult' in Pingchuan City."
……
Meanwhile, on the second floor, in the room opposite where Su Jue and the others were hiding.
A thick iron chain was embedded in the wall, binding a large chunk of rotting flesh. The flesh writhed in place, and on it clung to countless human faces, wailing in agony.
"Help...help...me..."
