Chapter 1130: Janelle Tollman Arc, Did We Know Each Other Before?
Janelle shot her a look, took off her gloves and said, "Tidy up the workbench and you can get off."The little assistant even teased, "Boss lady, with such a handsome guy sitting right in front of you, you’re really not even a little tempted?"
Janelle didn’t reply, just lifted her feet and went downstairs.
From a distance she saw the man sitting on the sofa in the waiting area, with Noah, just back from kindergarten, glued to his side.
"Uncle Sutton, do you know how to make paper planes? Our teacher taught us today, I’ll fold one for you!"
"Okay." The man smiled gently, reaching out to scoop Noah into his arms, watching as Noah’s chubby little hands clumsily folded the paper.
The man’s name was Arthur Sutton; Janelle had learned from her staff that this man’s background was anything but ordinary.
These days he’d show up at the shop right around the time school let out.
Noah was like the little boss of the place, and every time a customer came in she’d warmly greet them; Arthur was no exception.
These days Arthur had been buying Noah snacks and toys off and on, so now whenever Noah saw him she was pretty fond of him.
"Noah, don’t fool around. Go play over there with your brother." Janelle walked over, gently chiding her daughter.
Noah shook the paper in her hand and explained, "Mom, I’m folding a plane for Uncle."
Afraid Noah would bother Arthur, Janelle reached out and lifted her from his arms. "Go fold it over there first, then bring it to Uncle when it’s done."
"Okay then." Noah obediently ran off to her brother.
Once the child had gone, Janelle sat down in the seat opposite Arthur.
"Your daughter looks a lot like you."
Janelle froze for a moment; the words she’d been about to say stuck in her throat.
Her assistant’s voice suddenly rang in her head: "Boss lady, is this Mr. Sutton one of your old flings or something? How come Connor looks a bit like him?"
Janelle was a bit face-blind, so before people mentioned it, she hadn’t noticed at all.
But now, looking at the man in front of her, he really did look a little like her son.
Thinking of that man who was still missing to this day, Janelle couldn’t help wondering if Arthur’s appearance was really just a coincidence.
That curiosity made her want to probe into why Arthur kept coming by every few days and what he was after.
"People all say that." Janelle smiled as she answered him, then smoothly changed the subject. "Mr. Sutton, are you here to order a custom perfume again today?"
Arthur shook his head. "I promised Noah I’d buy her some paintbrushes and stickers. I just dropped them off on my way after work."
"She’s a kid; she doesn’t know better and made you spend money. Next time if you need anything, Mr. Sutton, I’ll give you a discount."
Arthur said, "Don’t say that. It’s not much money. As long as the kid likes it."
Janelle hesitated for a moment and asked, "Um... Mr. Sutton, there’s something I’ve been wanting to ask you."
"Yeah?"
Janelle fixed her eyes on his face, searching. "...Have we met before?"
Arthur was taken aback. He really didn’t know how to answer that. To say yes, they’d only met once; to say no, he was the father of her two children.
"Sort of."
His ambiguous answer left Janelle a bit at sea, but she felt that if Arthur really were the boyfriend from back then, he wouldn’t have answered like that.
Besides, she felt the man in front of her didn’t seem like the type to "fly solo when disaster hits," the kind of guy who’d run from responsibility.
What’s more, she’d been born into an ordinary family; it was unlikely she’d ever have had the chance to cross paths with someone from such a wealthy background.
But still, the more she looked, the more her son really did resemble him. Could it really just be a coincidence?
